AAPAW exists to support and strengthen independent animal rescue organizations working throughout the San Antonio region. We understand the challenges rescues face every day — limited funding, rising medical costs, foster shortages, and increasing demand. Our role is to help remove barriers, provide targeted support, and ensure that rescue organizations can focus on what matters most: saving lives.

 

How AAPAW Supports Rescue Partners

 

AAPAW provides strategic, behind-the-scenes support designed to extend the reach and capacity of rescue organizations.

 

Program Support

 

Rescue partners may access assistance through AAPAW’s core programs, including:

​

• Spay & Neuter Assistance - to prevent future intake

• Heartworm Treatment Assistance - to remove medical barriers to adoption

• Good Samaritan & Emergency Support - for found, injured animals in need of urgent care

 

Support is provided based on program criteria and available funding, with an emphasis on maximizing impact across the rescue network.

Resource Coordination

 

AAPAW helps connect rescue organizations with:

• Veterinary partners

• Community resources

• Educational materials and best practices

• Collaborative opportunities with other rescues

 

By sharing resources and information, we reduce duplication of effort and strengthen outcomes for animals.

 

A Collaborative Model

 

AAPAW does not operate a shelter or place animals directly. Instead, we serve as a central support system — working in partnership with rescue organizations rather than alongside or in competition with them. This collaborative approach:

• Respects the independence of each rescue

• Strengthens the overall animal welfare ecosystem

• Ensures donor and grant dollars are used efficiently

 

Our goal is to support, not replace, the important work rescues are already doing.

• Foster-based and breed-specific rescues

• Rescue groups committed to humane, ethical animal welfare practices (see our Minimum Standards of Care)

While partnership does not guarantee funding, AAPAW seeks to build long-term, collaborative relationships with rescue organizations that align with our mission and values.
