AAPAW Joins Tour for Life 2011 to Host a Super-Sized Adoption Event

Sat. April 9, 2011Gusts of wind and unseasonally warm weather didn’t keep the rescues, shelters and forever families away from Lifetime Fitness.

When Tour for Life rolled its giant Mobile Adoption Unit onto the Lifetime Fitness parking lot, AAPAW and its rescue partners were ready.  Ninety-five adoptable pets were on site, and 38 found homes, with some additional adoptions pending!

In partnership with PURINA ONE®, North Shore Animal League America’s Tour for Life is the world’s largest cooperative national adoption initiative aimed at reinforcing the importance and advantages of shelter pet adoptions and familiarizing communities with their local shelter.  Two Mobile Adoption Units are traveling simultaneously across the country and partnering with more than 100 shelter and rescue groups in 37 cities in 19 states.

AAPAW was delighted to partner with Tour for Life and is looking forward to next year.  Let’s get even more pets adopted!

AAPAW’s 2,500th Pet is Adopted During the PetCo Grand Re-Opening!

Sat. April 2, 2011 –  AAPAW’s 2,500th pet adoption took place at the PetCo (Bandera/1604) Grand Re-Opening Mega-Adoption Event!  The lucky rescue was Helotes Humane Society (HHS), a fitting result as HHS was the coordinator of this event.  The lucky family was Rick Waller and his daughter Amber of Helotes, pictured left with (from left to right) LuAnn Vokolek, HHS foster; Rachel Battaglia, AAPAW Adoption Event Coordinator; and Barbara Martino, HHS Treasurer.

The Waller family received $40 of pet products and a $60 gift certificate donated by Petra’s Salon.  The lucky pup, StellaLuna, is a one-year-old chihuahua who was fostered by LuAnn Vokolek of San Antonio.  StellaLuna will no doubt enjoy the spoils of that prize!

“HHS is honored to have the 2,500th adoption at an AAPAW event,”  said Barbara Martino, HHS Treasurer.  “We welcomed the opportunity to host the event for AAPAW at PetCo Northwest and were delighted when one of our animals made the record adoption number.  Our rescue, as well as other rescues, rely on AAPAW donations to provide advertising and support to these large adoption events.  With the community’s help, rescues like Helotes Humane Society can continue to make a difference to the animals of San Antonio.”

Thank you, HHS!  Along with Stella Luna, fifty-two pets were adopted at the event!  Wouldn’t it be great if we could reach 200 adoptions in April alone?  Please help us by visiting our calendar of events, downloading the flyers and distributing them to friends, co-workers and local businesses.  Want to do more?  Volunteer!

Pucks and AAPAWs: Humans and Dogs Alike Cheer on San Antonio Rampage

Sun. March 20, 2011 — Rampage fans come in all shapes and sizes.  Some have two legs, and some have four.  Hundreds of dogs and their owners were among the fans at the Rampage annual Pucks and Paws event.  All proceeds from the dog tickets went to AAPAW!

AAPAW volunteers took photos of the fans, helped with “poop patrol” and spread the word about “Care Adopt Neuter.”  And lucky rescue dogs got to ride the zamboni!  Animal Care Services adopted three of the eight dogs they brought to the event, with another adoption pending.  San Antonio Great Dane Rescue brought its Dane ambassadors and received three or four serious applications, some volunteers and donations.  Wildlife Rehabilitation & Rescue brought three dogs and adopted out one: Homer!

We can hardly wait until next year!
